Completion of Classmates project
- Double-check that you have all available bios and photos.
- Log on to the file server. Open "Take" folder for this class, compare with what you have on your own disk. Drag to your hard drive any files you are missing. Trash file server icon.
- Add missing files (if any) to Classmates document.
- Copy to the hard drive your Classmates document from the previous lab session. Double-click on the Classmates file icon on the hard drive to launch FreeHand.
- Use File-->Import to import missing bios and photos.
- Additional design tools:
- Link together text blocks to continue long stories.
- Use the arrow tool to select the first block to be linked. Drag from the small square hanging below the block to the next text block that you want to link.
- To separate a text block, use the arrow tool to drag away the linking symbol from the square below the text block.
- Create runarounds for pictures overlaying text.
- Select the picture with the black arrow tool.
- Modify-->Arrange-->Bring To Front
- Use Text-->Run Around Selection.
- Click the top-right icon. You can control the distance between the picture and the type by changing the standoff settings.
- Duplicate your prototype page
- Make sure the Inspector palette is visible and extended. Click the Document Inspector icon (the rightmost in the top row).
- Click the middle Pasteboard Magnification icon (to the right of the Options menu).
- Use the Duplicate command in the Options menu to get enough pages to accommodate all students, one to each page.
- Optionally, add nonprinting guides to all pages
- View-->Guides-->Edit; click .
- Select guides' orientation ("Horizontal" or "Vertical"), number ("Count") or spacing ("Increment") and location ("Position").
- Enter the range of pages created in the previous step, so that all will have the same guides.
- Guides assist in maintaining a consistent layout
- In the View menu, make sure the following are checked: Guides-->Show, Guides-->Lock, and Snap To Guides.
- Position bios and photos on the pages
- Use the arrow tool to drag each student's picture and text in the same location on a different page.
- Correct imported photographs:
- Make sure the Inspector palette is visible and extended. Click the Object Inspector icon (the leftmost in the top row). Use the arrow tool to select a photograph.
- Click the button at the bottom of the palette. Use the lightness and contrast scroll bars to adjust the photo.
- Click to check the effect of your corrections.
- Click to return to initial settings.
- Click when satisfied.
- Scale pictures as needed.
- Alternatively, type in an exact scale ratio in the "Scale %" fields in the Object Inspector.
- Resize text blocks as needed.
- Select the picture to be scaled with the arrow tool, then drag one of its corner handles to establish new size. Make sure that you do not drag one of the handles on the sides, top, or bottom of the block
- Define a set of type styles, and apply them
- Styles assist in maintaining consistent type format
- Make sure the Styles palette is visible and extended
- Use the text tool to select text within text blocks on the first page.
- Use the commands in the top section of the Type menu to format text as desired.
- While the text you just formatted is still selected, use the New command in the Options menu of the Styles palette.
- Double-click the default name of the new style and enter a descriptive name
- Typically, you will want one style for the students' names and a second one for their bios.
- Apply the styles you defined to text in the following pages by selecting the text (with the text tool), then clicking on the name of the style in the Style palette)
- Save your files
- Before leaving, copy FreeHand file and all student files to your floppy disks. You will need to turn them in later for grading.
